Modular Kitchen design ideas

Indian kitchens work harder than most: tempering and frying, heavy vessels, several cooks and daily deep cleaning. A modular kitchen that is planned around those habits stays practical and beautiful for years.

At a Glance

Planned around real Indian cooking — ventilation, storage and easy-clean surfaces.

  • Choose a layout (L-shaped, parallel or island) that fits how many people cook at once.
  • Plan the chimney, hob and sink together, and keep heavy utensils in deep drawers.
  • Consider a separate wet or utility area for washing and heavy-duty cooking.

Choose the layout

  • L-shaped — the most common and versatile layout in NCR apartments.
  • Parallel — efficient for one cook; can separate wet and dry zones.
  • Straight — compact and economical for smaller flats.
  • Island or U-shaped — for larger homes and villas where several people cook together.

Our modular kitchen cost guide compares layouts, materials and budgets in detail.

Materials that last

Use BWP plywood for the sink unit and wet zone, and BWP, BWR or HDHMR elsewhere. Granite or quartz counters resist stains from turmeric and oil — see our countertop guide. For shutters, laminate is the toughest; acrylic and PU give a sleek look. See which board to use where.

Storage and accessories

  • Deep drawers for heavy kadhais and pressure cookers.
  • A tall pull-out larder for groceries and masalas.
  • A corner carousel or swing-out so the L-corner is usable.
  • A utility area for washing, the water purifier and a dishwasher.

Ventilation and lighting

A ducted chimney vented outside keeps grease off cabinets and ceilings. Plan the duct before the false ceiling. Under-cabinet task lights remove shadows on the counter, and dedicated points for every appliance avoid trailing wires.

Modular Kitchen design: your questions

Can’t find your answer? Ask our design team.

How much does a modular kitchen cost?

With AHU Interior, a modular kitchen starts at around ₹1.5 lakh with laminate finishes. Premium finishes and more accessories take a typical kitchen to ₹2–3.5 lakh.

Which countertop is best for an Indian kitchen?

Granite is hard-wearing and economical; quartz is non-porous and very easy to clean. Avoid porous marble on the cooking counter, as it stains.
