Master Bedroom design ideas

A master bedroom should feel like a retreat: quiet, uncluttered and restful. In most NCR apartments it also holds the largest wardrobe in the home, so storage has to be planned as carefully as the mood.

Bedroom with a full-width timber headboard wall, pendant lights and soft linen bedding

At a Glance

A restful retreat with storage that keeps the room clear.

  • Anchor the room with a full-width headboard wall in fabric, timber or textured plaster.
  • Use blackout and sheer curtains together to control harsh afternoon sun.
  • Keep bedside lighting glare-free with pendants or wall lights on dimmers.

Layout and storage

  • Place the bed on the wall opposite the door where possible, with space to walk on both sides.
  • Run the wardrobe floor to ceiling with a loft for luggage — see our wardrobe design guide.
  • Choose sliding shutters if the space between bed and wardrobe is under about 90 cm.
  • A storage bed with hydraulic lift keeps quilts and seasonal clothes out of the way.

The headboard wall

A full-width headboard panel in fabric, timber, fluted veneer or textured plaster anchors the room. Integrate bedside shelves and concealed lighting so you need fewer loose lamps.

Light, sun and comfort

  • Layer sheer and blackout curtains — west-facing bedrooms in NCR get intense afternoon sun.
  • Use warm white light and wall or pendant lights at the bedside instead of downlights above the pillow.
  • Put the main lights on two-way switches so you can control them from bed.

FAQs

Master Bedroom design: your questions

Can’t find your answer? Ask our design team.

What is the ideal wardrobe for a master bedroom?

A full-height wardrobe of around 60 cm depth with a loft, combining long and double hanging, shelves and drawers based on what you own. Sliding shutters suit tighter rooms.

Should the TV be in the bedroom?

It is a personal choice. If you include one, wall-mount it on a slim panel opposite the bed and keep wiring concealed so the room still feels calm.
