TV Unit design ideas

The TV wall is usually the first thing you see in a living room. Designed as a single composition — panelling, storage and display — it becomes a feature rather than just a place for the television.

At a Glance

The focal wall of the living room — media, storage and display in one composition.

  • Wall-mount the TV and float the unit below it so the floor stays visible.
  • Combine closed storage for set-top boxes and clutter with a few open display niches.
  • Plan conduits for cables before the panelling goes up, so no wires show.

Styles that work

  • Floating unit below a wall-mounted TV — light and easy to clean under.
  • Full-height media wall in veneer, fluted panels or stone with integrated storage.
  • Panel with open niches for books and objects, with closed drawers for clutter.

Planning details

  • Mount the TV so its centre is roughly at eye level when seated (about 100–110 cm from the floor).
  • Run conduits for HDMI, power and set-top boxes before panelling.
  • Ventilate closed compartments for routers and set-top boxes.
  • Add a concealed LED strip behind the panel for soft evening light.

FAQs

TV Unit design: your questions

Can’t find your answer? Ask our design team.

What is the right size of TV unit?

The unit should usually be wider than the TV — at least a little on each side — and in proportion to the wall. For a 55-inch TV, a unit of around 6–8 ft often looks balanced.
