Dining Area design ideas

In most Indian homes the dining table is used three times a day — and doubles as a homework desk, a work table and the centre of every festival meal. It needs to be comfortable, practical and easy to extend.

At a Glance

Where everyday meals and festive dinners both feel at ease.

  • Size the table for daily use, with space to extend for guests.
  • Hang a statement pendant low over the table to define the zone in open plans.
  • Add a crockery unit or bar cabinet that doubles as a serving counter.

Size the table to the room

  • Allow about 60 cm of table width per person and 90 cm behind each chair to pull out.
  • A six-seater suits most 3 BHK homes; an extendable table helps in 2 BHKs.
  • Round tables soften tight spaces and make conversation easier.

Storage and serving

A crockery unit with glass-fronted display, drawers for cutlery and a counter for serving keeps meals organised. In open plans, the unit can also screen the kitchen.

Lighting the table

A pendant or cluster hung about 75 cm above the table defines the dining zone. Pair it with a dimmer and a recessed false ceiling panel for a finished look.

FAQs

Dining Area design: your questions

Can’t find your answer? Ask our design team.

Where should the dining table be placed?

Close to the kitchen, with a clear path for serving, and away from the main walkway from the entrance. In open plans, align it under its own light.
