Balcony design ideas

In a high-rise flat, the balcony is your garden, tea corner and fresh-air escape. With the right materials it can be used across NCR’s hot summers, monsoon and winter evenings.

At a Glance

A green outdoor room for morning tea and cool evenings.

  • Choose weather-resistant flooring such as deck tiles or anti-skid stone.
  • Layer planters at different heights to create privacy and shade.
  • Add a compact seat and warm outdoor lighting to use the space after dark.

Flooring and weatherproofing

Use deck tiles, anti-skid ceramic or natural stone that drains well. Check the slope so rainwater runs off, and choose furniture in powder-coated metal, cane or treated wood.

Green, private and comfortable

  • Layer planters at different heights for privacy from neighbouring towers.
  • Choose plants that tolerate heat and dust, and plan a tap or watering routine.
  • Add bamboo blinds or outdoor roller blinds for afternoon sun.
  • Warm outdoor lights and a compact seat make evenings usable.

Check your society’s rules

Many societies restrict changes to balcony façades, grilles and enclosures. Check before planning glass enclosures — see our possession checklist.

FAQs

Balcony design: your questions

Can’t find your answer? Ask our design team.

Can I enclose my balcony with glass?

It depends on your society and local building rules, as enclosures change the façade. Check with your RWA or maintenance office before planning one.
