Pooja Room design ideas

Whether it is a full room in a villa or a wall-mounted unit in a 2 BHK, the pooja space deserves care: a sense of occasion, materials that are safe around a diya, and storage that keeps it serene.

At a Glance

A serene space for daily prayer, whether a full room or a quiet corner unit.

  • Carved timber, marble or backlit jaali panels give the mandir a sense of occasion.
  • Plan storage for diyas, incense and puja essentials so the space stays uncluttered.
  • Position the mandir thoughtfully, and choose heat-safe surfaces around the diya.

Formats for every home

  • Wall-mounted unit with drawers and a backlit panel — ideal for compact flats.
  • Cabinet mandir with doors, for living or dining areas.
  • Alcove or niche framed in stone or timber.
  • Dedicated pooja room with seating and storage in larger homes.

Materials and safety

Use marble or stone where diyas are lit, solid wood or veneer for the structure, and CNC-cut jaali for doors and backdrops. Keep laminates, acrylic and fabrics away from the flame, and ventilate for incense smoke.

Placement

Many families follow traditional Vastu guidance — the north-east of the home, facing east or north while praying, and away from bathroom walls. In apartments we find the placement that best balances tradition with the layout. Read more in our pooja room design guide.

What size should a mandir unit be?

Wall-mounted units are often 2–3 ft wide, while floor-standing cabinet mandirs are typically 3–4 ft wide. The right size depends on your idols, the wall and how many people pray together.

Which light is best for a pooja room?

Warm white light of around 2700–3000K, ideally concealed behind a jaali or above the idols, alongside the diya.
