The board inside your cabinets is invisible once the shutters are on — which is exactly why it is so often where corners are cut. Yet it decides whether a kitchen sink unit swells after one monsoon, or a wardrobe sags under the weight of clothes.
Here is a plain-language guide to the boards used in modular furniture in India, and where each one belongs.
The boards at a glance
| Board | Moisture resistance | Strength / screw holding | Relative cost | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BWP / marine plywood | Highest | Excellent | High | Kitchen sink units, bathroom vanities, anything near water |
| BWR plywood | Good | Very good | Medium–high | Kitchens (dry units), wardrobes on damp-prone walls |
| MR plywood | Moderate (humidity, not water) | Very good | Medium | Wardrobes, beds, study units in dry rooms |
| HDHMR board | Good | Good | Medium | Kitchen dry units, wardrobes, shutters |
| MDF | Low (unless moisture-resistant grade) | Moderate | Low–medium | Routed or painted shutters, decorative panels |
| Particle board | Low | Lower | Lowest | Budget loose furniture in dry areas |
Plywood grades explained
Plywood is made from thin wood veneers glued in cross-layers, which makes it strong and good at holding screws. The grade refers mainly to the glue:
- MR (moisture resistant) — handles humidity but not direct water. Covered by IS 303.
- BWR (boiling water resistant) — better water resistance for kitchens and damp walls.
- BWP (boiling water proof) / marine — the highest grade, made to IS 710, for wet areas.
HDHMR: the modern middle ground
High Density High Moisture Resistance (HDHMR) board is an engineered board made from wood fibres compressed at high density. It is smooth, stable, resists termites and moisture well, and machines cleanly — which is why many modular manufacturers use it. It is heavier than plywood and its screw holding, while good, is a little lower, so the hardware must be fixed correctly.
MDF and particle board
MDF has a very smooth surface that is ideal for PU-painted shutters, membrane finishes and CNC-routed designs. Standard MDF does not like water, so keep it away from sinks unless a moisture-resistant grade is used. Particle board is the most economical but the weakest; it is common in ready-made furniture, and we do not recommend it for kitchens or for long wardrobe shelves.
Our recommendations room by room
- [Kitchen](/design-ideas/kitchen): BWP plywood for the sink unit and wet zone; BWP, BWR or HDHMR for other units.
- [Bathroom vanity](/design-ideas/bathroom): BWP plywood only.
- [Wardrobes](/design-ideas/wardrobe): MR or BWR plywood or HDHMR; BWP if the wall shares a bathroom.
- [TV unit](/design-ideas/tv-unit) and study: MR plywood or HDHMR, with MDF for routed decorative panels.
- Shutters: HDHMR or plywood for laminate and acrylic; MDF for PU paint and membrane.
The board you choose also affects your budget — see how in our home interior cost guide, and pair it with the right shutter finish.
