Interiors are one of the largest purchases a family makes after the home itself — and unlike most purchases, you only see the finished product weeks after paying for it. Choosing the right designer is the single biggest factor in how the project goes.

These are the questions we would ask if we were in your place.

About their work

  1. Can I see projects you have completed — and visit one? Renders are easy to make; finished homes and real clients show what a studio actually delivers.
  2. Have you worked in homes like mine? A new high-rise flat, a Delhi builder floor and a villa each come with different challenges.
  3. Who will design my home, and who will manage the site? Ask to meet them.
  4. Do you manufacture the modular furniture yourselves, or through partners? Either can work well — see modular vs carpenter-made furniture — but you should know who is responsible for quality.

About cost and materials

  1. Will I get an itemised quotation? Every unit, its size, material and finish should be listed — not just “complete 3 BHK package”.
  2. Which board grade and brands will you use? The quote should state, for example, “BWP plywood” for the sink unit and name the hardware brand. Our board materials guide explains what to look for.
  3. Is GST included? And what is not included — appliances, loose furniture, painting, society charges?
  4. How are payments structured? Milestone-linked payments protect both sides.

About process and timelines

  1. Will I see 3D views or detailed drawings before production starts?
  2. What is the timeline, and how will you keep me updated?
  3. How do you handle society permissions, working hours and debris?
  4. What warranty and after-sales support do you give — in writing?

What a good quotation looks like

  • Room-by-room line items with dimensions.
  • Carcass material and grade, shutter finish, and edge banding for each unit.
  • Hardware brand and type (hinges, channels, accessories).
  • What is excluded, stated clearly.
  • Taxes, payment schedule and estimated timeline.

Use our home interior cost guide and the cost calculator to sense-check the numbers you receive.

Red flags to watch for

  • A large advance — more than a booking amount — before any design work.
  • Package prices with no material specifications.
  • Reluctance to put timelines, materials or warranties in writing.
  • Prices far below every other quote; the difference usually shows up in the board, hardware or finishing.
  • No completed projects you can see or clients you can speak to.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can’t find your answer? Ask our design team.

Is it worth hiring an interior designer for a flat?

For a complete home, yes. A designer plans the layout and storage, coordinates trades and specifies materials, which usually prevents costly mistakes and rework — and the result works better for daily life.

Should I choose a designer or a modular furniture company?

A modular company focuses on kitchens and wardrobes. A design studio plans the whole home — layout, lighting, ceilings, finishes and furniture — and coordinates the modular work within it.

How many quotations should I compare?

Two or three detailed, itemised quotations are usually enough. Compare them line by line on materials and hardware, not only on the total.
